In a significant casting announcement, Lionsgate's upcoming Michael Jackson biopic has confirmed that Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo will portray Joe Jackson, the controversial patriarch of the celebrated musical family. This news comes as Domingo rides the wave of critical acclaim following his Oscar-nominated performance in Rustin.
The biopic, titled "Michael," is currently in production and is slated for a global release on April 18, 2025. The film will cover all aspects of Jackson’s life, though it remains unclear how it will address the many controversies involving the late music icon.
Joe Jackson, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 89, was the father of Michael, Janet, and their eight siblings, and the architect of the Jackson 5. His management of his children's musical careers in the early 1960s, while they were living in Gary, Indiana, led to the formation of the Jackson 5.
In the biopic, Michael Jackson will be portrayed by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson. Domingo expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "Not only am I fortunate to have a rich, complex and flawed character to portray in Joe Jackson, but I also have a front row seat for Jaafar’s incredible transformation. After seeing him in rehearsal, my mind was blown".
The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua from a script by John Logan. Fuqua praised Domingo's range and dedication to his characters, expressing gratitude for working with an actor capable of portraying the many sides of Joe Jackson.
The film is being produced by Graham King, a seasoned hand at biopics with the Oscar-winning Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody under his belt, along with John Branca and John McClain, who are the co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate.
The anticipation for this biopic is high, as it promises to provide a fresh perspective on the life and career of Michael Jackson, one of the most influential figures in pop music history. With Colman Domingo's casting as Joe Jackson, audiences can expect a nuanced portrayal of a complex figure, adding another layer of depth to the narrative.
